In June 2009 I took two recently graduated MFA students from the University of Illinois on a teaching/performing tour to Taipei Taiwan, Phnom Penh Cambodia and Puglia Southern Italy.
We went first to Taipei in Taiwan and were hosted by my good friends Mei Li and RuHong. We stayed with them in their mountain home just outside Taipei ad studied Tai Chi with their teacher Master Pong. We also taught in various settings including two universities, and number of high schools and for the dance company Dance Forum Taipei. At the end of our time in Taipei we performed at the Taipei Artist Village. We were 7 dancers (4 Taiwanese, 2 Americans and 1 British) and a French musician (sound sculptor).
From Taipei 5 of us traveled to Phnom Penh (the 2 students Renay and Laura, myself, Mei Li and RuHong). We had an extraordinary 9 day visit and met a number of wonderful Cambodian artists, organizations and local people. We took extensive footage of our adventures which we will be making into a film in the near future.
We left Cambodia with plans to return in August 2010.
Laura, Renay and I traveled to Southern Italy for a continuation of the research weeks I have held each summer since 2006 in Italy and last summer in Greece. Mei and RuHong returned to Taiwan.
